Volunteers for Eldfesten 2024 - Persian New Year celebration in Gothenburg

Eldfestkommittén i Göteborg is looking for volunteers for the annual Eldfesten event. Since 1992, Eldfesten has been organized in Gothenburg to celebrate spring, the start of the Persian New Year and the return of light. The celebration is not religiously bound and the event is visited annually by around 20,000 Gothenburgers and visiting visitors. We would like the help of volunteers during the event in the areas of security and service.

About the tradition around event
Eldfesten (Charshanbeh Suri) is the start of the celebration of the Persian New Year (Nouruz). It is the most important holiday of the whole year and is celebrated with family and friends. The holiday is not only celebrated by Persians, but also by other ethnic groups around Iran. The celebration begins at sunset on the last Tuesday before the New Year and continues until New Year's Eve, which falls on March 20, 2024. The celebration begins with Eldfesten (Chaharshanbeh suri) that is on March 19, 2024. During the event, you welcome spring and bid farewell to in winter, this is done by skipping the bonfires that are lit during the party. You get rid of the winter cold and instead get the warmth and vitality of the fire. The background to Eldfesten is to welcome the souls of the deceased with warmth and purity, similar to the Swedish Valborg tradition.
